In 2013, in partnership with managing director David May, Maris invested in a group of 32 mining blocks covering 5 mines, which had laid dormant since the 1980’s: Bee Mine, Bee Eater Mine, Pamela Mine, Commoner Mine and Welcome Back Mine. The largest mine, Commoner, produced over 4 tonnes of gold during its working lifetime. We have rehabilitated the infrastructure and an open pit mining operation has re-commenced.

Karebe Gold Mining Limited is Kenya’s only operating gold mine and includes three separate sites: Equatorial, Rock Corry and Boma Mines. KGML has grown to nearly 300 employees and is one of the largest private sector employers in the region. Over 90% of KGML employees are from the local area.

Venice Mine Complex

Venice Mine Complex holds 106 mining blocks covering approximately 2,660 hectares. It has extensive underground and surface infrastructure and over 100 years of recorded production. Since acquiring Venice in 2015 we have embarked on a phased redevelopment of the main Venice mine and its satellites, including significant investment in new infrastructure. A Carbon in Leach tailings retreatment operation has commenced, to treat the 2.1 million tons of tailings material.
