In 2009, the Maris team and Mining Division manager David May started Karebe Gold Mining Limited, now the largest gold producer in Kenya. Karebe has grown to over 300 employees and now mines 3 separate mines in Western Kenya; Equatorial, Rock Corry and Boma Mines.
Karebe has a strong focus on social responsibility, including responsibility to its employees, communities and the environment in which it operates. Karebe focuses heavily on the health and safety for its employees, and has become a hub for technical training and social development in the region. It has brought roads, water, power, medical facilities and teaching facilities to the local area. It complies with local and international regulations, including the IFC Performance Standards on measuring, mitigating and reporting its environmental and social impact.
